Today’s topic is about coffee and also just eating out in general. I’ve reconfirmed and learned a few new things when it comes to ordering food from being here.
There are a couple ways to order:
*order at the table
*order when you enter at the vending machine and pay (usually for ramen, meat and rice bowls, fast food, etc.)
*order at the counter, pay, and pick up food after
*order from a screen (回転寿司)
Ways to Pay:
*normal check given at the table (no tip)
*given the check and you pay at the counter when you leave (super common)
*pay when you enter (vending machines) and keep the receipt to give to the waiter or to pick up your order (number appears on a tv screen)
For the counter pay for coffee chains, Mister Donut, etc, they will usually ask you:
店内 (てんない)で: dine in
(sometimes they use some variations such as:
ここに食べていますか? or ここに過ごしていますか?something like that) or
お持ち帰り(おもちかえり)で: take out
I’ve mentioned this before but…
サービス: service = on the house (aka it’s free)
お会計 (おかいけ): bill
Some Common Coffee Chains:
Starbucks
Doutor
Tully’s Coffee
Pronto
Komeda’s Coffee
Excelsior Coffee
Trivia:
If you plan on working in a school in Japan, sometimes you have to join a coffee club to drink the coffee in the staff room. The price may seem like a lot at first, but it’s really not given the amount of months it is valid for.
